Rilakkuma is one of the most popular San X characters, a cuddly brown bear known for his lazy and relaxed attitude. Rilakkuma’s story began with San X, a Japanese stationery company famous for it’s cute characters. In 2003, a San X employee named Aki Kondo was challenged to a new character and combined the words rilakkusu (relax) and kuma to create Rilakkuma, the bear in a relaxed mood.It has an assortment of bear friends Korilakkuma and Chairoikoguma, along with a bird Kiiroitori. After its launch in 2003, Rilakkuma featured on an animation series titled Rilakkuma and Kaoru in 2019, as well as on stationery, merchandise and themed collaboration cafes.Since then, Rilakkuma has become one of the most popular San X characters and is loved for its round features, big eyes, and lazy attitude.
